- Pentoxifylline is used primarily in dogs and horses to increase the life span of red blood cells and increase blood flow to areas not getting enough blood. Non-healing skin ulcers (sores) and navicular disease (founder) are examples of these conditions. This medicine is also being tried to help treat dilated cardiomyopathy in Doberman pinschers, reduce the effects of toxins in the intestines released by bacteria during horse colic (endotoxemia), and reduce blood vessel inflammation in cats with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).
