Minerva Starritt received her degree in education and art from Humboldt State University in 1929. For the next seven years she taught in one and two-room schools in remote mountain communities along the lower Klamath River, mixing art and health lessons in with basic reading and math, treating minor ailments, and organizing the baseball team. Most of her students were Yurok or Karuk.
